It has been eight years since Keanu Reeves' iconic character John Wick embarked on a vengeful quest after his puppy was killed, and his thirst for revenge remains unaltered. We still fondly remember that beloved puppy.
Since the release of the first film, Chad Stahelski's John Wick series has rapidly gained a cult following, igniting what can only be described as a "Keanussance." The momentum continued with John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum. Now, on March 24, 2023, we eagerly anticipate the arrival of John Wick: Chapter 4, once again directed by Stahelski and featuring a screenplay penned by Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3, Army of the Dead) and Michael Finch (Predators, Hitman: Agent 47).
Excitingly, there has been a steady stream of news surrounding the plot, and the recent theatrical trailer provided further insights into the movie. Let's delve into what our beloved and seemingly invincible assassin has been up to and everything we know about John Wick: Chapter 4.
EXPLORING THE WICK-IVERSE IN DEPTH Keanu Reeves in John Wick: According to the official synopsis, John Wick will unravel a path to defeating the High Table. However, before he can secure his freedom, he must confront a new adversary with powerful alliances worldwide, transforming old allies into foes.
Naturally, we can anticipate an abundance of action sequences and Stahelski's signature "gun-fu" fight choreography. The trailer, accompanied by a cool, reverberating remix of Terry Jack's "Seasons in the Sun," hints at a deeper exploration of the Wick-iverse's mythology, promising intriguing revelations about John's character.
In an interview with Empire, the director gave us a glimpse of what to expect, describing the sequel as a fusion of "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly," Zatoichi, and elements of Greek mythology. JOHN'S RETURN AND NEW ALLIES Hiroyuki Sanada in John Wick: Chapter 4 Keanu Reeves returns, embodying the titular lethal assassin with his effortless style and charisma.
Last seen in Parabellum, John Wick was double-crossed by Winston (Ian McShane) and shot off a roof. Despite the odds, Mr. Wick survives and finds himself in the company of the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne).
Together, they agree to join forces against the High Table, a council of crime lords governing the most influential criminal organizations in the underworld. In addition to the returning cast members, including McShane and Fishburne, Lance Reddick reprises his role as the Continental concierge Charon.
Joining them is an outstanding ensemble featuring Donnie Yen, renowned for his role in Ip Man, as Caine, one of John's former assassin associates. The trailer teases an intense confrontation between them, promising a thrilling spectacle.
Japanese legend Hiroyuki Sanada stars as Shimazu, while Japanese-British pop star Rina Sawayama makes her feature acting debut. Bill Skarsgård steps in as the formidable antagonist Marquis de Gramont, offering John his freedom from the High Table under the condition that he defeats him in combat.
The cast also includes Scott Adkins, Clancy Brown, Shamier Anderson, Marko Zaror, and George Georgiou, who replaces Saïd Taghmaoui as The Elder.
SPOILER ALERT: A BLEAK FUTURE AWAITS Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum For those closely following the series, it should come as no surprise that Chapter 4 does not promise a happy ending for John, a character perpetually plagued by misfortune.
Stahelski practically confirmed this in an interview with IndieWire, stating that there is no blissful conclusion awaiting our protagonist. He further elaborated, emphasizing the inevitable outcome for a character who has slain hundreds of people, asking if we truly believe he would ride off into the sunset unscathed, finding love along the way. In reality, such a person would be perpetually haunted and doomed.
John Wick's story is no exception. It seems we're in for an emotional ride. In fact, Chapter 4 is set to be the longest installment thus far, with a runtime reaching around 150 minutes. EXPANDING THE WICK-IVERSE Ana de Armas.
Just when we thought the Wick-iverse couldn't get any richer, Lionsgate announced a spin-off film titled Ballerina, focusing on Ana de Armas' character and helmed by director Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard, Underworld franchise). Co-written by Wiseman and Shay Hatten, Ballerina follows a skilled assassin (de Armas) who seeks revenge after her family is murdered by hitmen—a concept that feels both familiar and enthralling.
Recent reports from THR unveiled that Anjelica Huston will reprise her role as the Director, the head of the Ruska Roma crime organization, initially introduced in John Wick: Chapter 3. The spin-off will also feature McShane, appearing as Winston, and Reeves is currently in negotiations to make an appearance as John Wick.
Additionally, alongside Ballerina, another exciting development is the announcement of a prequel TV series titled The Continental, expected to debut on Peacock in 2023. As the title implies, the series will delve into the origins of the Continental Hotel, which is a pivotal character within the franchise.
The Continental will follow a young manager named Winston Scott (Colin Woodell) in 1975 New York as he confronts his past. In an effort to gain control of the iconic hotel, a haven for the world's most dangerous criminals, Winston embarks on a treacherous journey through the enigmatic underworld of New York City. The series, initially planned for STARZ but later moved to Peacock, will also introduce a young Charon portrayed by Ayomide Adegun.
The ensemble cast includes Peter Greene, Ben Robson, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Jessica Allain, Mishel Prada, and Kate Nhung. Unfortunately, it seems the series will not feature a young John Wick—at least, not to our current knowledge.
You can find more details about The Continental here.
WILL THERE BE A JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 5?
Chapter 4 As of the latest information available, the answer is uncertain but leaning toward a yes. In August 2020, it was announced that John Wick: Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 would be filmed consecutively. Initially, Chapter 4 was slated for release earlier this year, coinciding with the Memorial Day weekend. However, a combination of scheduling conflicts and COVID-related challenges hindered the plans.
Consequently, the two sequels were not filmed back-to-back, and Lionsgate decided to proceed with John Wick: Chapter 4 only. There have been no updates regarding the status of John Wick: Chapter 5, but it seems probable that we'll witness its arrival in the future.
